Korean Style Valentine’s Day Party

Korean Style Valentine's Day Party

According to Giacomo Casanova, ‘Making love is nothing but the expression of lusting for food”….

In the spirit of the famous Italian lover we will be celebrating this Valentine’s weekend with a special ‘Korean Valentine’s party, with specially prepared Korean finger foods prepared by our friend Sergey of Chef’s Fresh, Prague’s finest creator of Korean cuisine. To suit the mood of the occasion Sergey will be concentrating on ‚foods of love‘, carefully made crystal rolls containing aphrodisiac ingredients and other goodies….

For the tiny price of 50 crowns we will offer you a selection of four Korean crystal rolls in 4 varieties: tofu + shitake, carrots + radish, chicken + fresh salad and shrimps + cucumber.

We will also be playing only classic love songs all night as well as serving some Korean drink specialities such as Soju and Makgeolli rice wine so be prepared to have your heart stretched, your liver titilated and your taste buds titivated! Sergey will be on hand to tell you all about the food and drink of Korea. We plan to start serving the food around 10 pm.

If you would like to read more about Sergey and his wonderful cuisine, check out his blog here: www.chefs-fresh.com.

We look forward to seeing you all there. Please let us know if you intend to come, this will help us to prepare the right amount of dishes.

Soju – Oh! You are my soju girl~!

Hollywood stars were the pinup girls in WWII. For Korea in this day and age, the equivalent of the pinup girl would be the beautiful stars who appear in… soju commercials. Soju is Korea’s main liquor, a distilled spirit made from rice, potatoes/sweet potatoes, or other grains. It’s called the Korean vodka, and for some reason is linked to the image of being “clean and pure”, thus making it a coveted product for stars to endorse, especially for the top soju companies.

Jinro’s Chamisul ads before the invasion of the soju girls

Since men are the main target consumers for soju, the models endorsing the drink are inevitably young and beautiful women, although the occasional male star would make an appearance for the growing number of women who imbibe in the nation’s drink. However, this trend of actresses and singers appearing in soju ads only started in the late ‘90s, when major soju company Jinro featured the actress Lee Young Ae (이영애, JSA, Dae Jang Geum) in their Chamisul (참이슬) campaign. Lee Young Ae was an actress on the rise, and portrayed the image that Jinro wanted when they were promoting their new ambitious brand.
